What does CERT stand for? 

CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. It educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. 


How much does the class cost? 

Our classes are completely FREE!


Who can register? 

You must be 18 years or older to enroll. 


Do I have to live in Long Beach to register?

No, you do not have to live in Long Beach to participate in our CERT classes. However, we primarily serve the greater Long Beach area, Long Beach residents have priority for registration.


Can I reserve a spot for someone else? 

Unfortunately, reserving spots is not allowed. We must have your complete information at the time of registration in order to guarantee a spot.


Will my sensitive information stay private after I give it to CERT? 

Yes, we do not disclose any personal information with third parties.


Can I bring kids with me? 

While we love children, this class is designed for adults only.


What do I wear? 

You must wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty in (i.e. t-shirt and jeans) and flat close-toed shoes! 


Do I need to bring any tools with me?

No, tools and class materials are provided to you. 


What happens if I miss a class?

If you miss a class, you are more than welcome to make-up the missed module during another class session. FYI you do not have to retake the entire training to make-up a module. If you're missing a module, you cannot graduate with your class until the missed module is completed.


How many times can I take the class?

Our classes are very impacted, we encourage you to take it and graduate once. You are always welcome to come back as a volunteer and reinforce your knowledge during other classes.


Are CERT classes offered in Spanish?

Yes, depending on availability. Please check our schedule!


Where do I get my CERT I.D.?

CERT I.D. Days are held a couple times a year. Please check our calendar and e-blasts for updates!


Where can I get CERT attire? 

You may buy CERT T-shirts by contacting CERT chair, Becky Rustuen. Hats and women's polos are available at the CERT office. 


What can I do after CERT? 

After you've gone through the course, you may participate in numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year with the Fire Department and other agencies. You may also attend our general membership meetings every first Tuesday of the month to keep your skills up to date! We also offer trainings throughout the year exclusively for our CERT members (i.e. First Aid, CPR etc.)


How can I request a CERT Booth for my event?

Send an email to with the date, time, address, etc. for the event. Please make sure to state if the event will be indoors or outside. Don't forget to include your contact information as well!
